Uncle Wilmer's World War II Letters to Matt & Marie Beckius

[ Return to Mary Jean's Page ]

Uncle Wilmer (Thoms), from Wahoo, Nebraska, served in the Infantry in World War II in Europe. These are the texts from "V-MAIL" letters he wrote to Mary Jean's mother and father, who were in Olympia, Washington. Her father, Matt Beckius was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington before going to Europe, then the Pacific Theater. It is really interesting to follow the events as they happened to Uncle Wilmer.

Hello: Matt & Marie

How are you all by now? I am just fine. And how do you like it out there? It is quite cool out here now and has been raining off and on quite a bit. Sure does make it nasty out.

Verona sent me a nice box last week with a lot of nice things to eat. You get tired eating K rations all the time. Got you letter quite awhile ago but havent had time to answer it. Don’t have time to answer them all at once. Well we have the Germans on the run. Cant hardly keep up with them. The French are sure glad to see us give us cider & cognac & wine and all kinds of fruit to eat. They sure are glad that we are running the Germans out. Well it is close to dinner time so will have to quit pretty soon. Cant think of much more to say anyway. Hope this finds you all well and may see you soon.

With love
Wilmer

Cant eat anything but a liquid diet. But get plenty to eat all the time. I am somewhere in England now came over here by plane sure was a nice ride. Would rather go that way than by ship. Sure have a nice place to stay and do they ever treat you nice. The Red Cross gives us cigarrettes & candy and everything else we need. We have a radio in are ward so get to listen to all the news and have it on all the time. Well guess that will be all for today. Cant think of much more to say.

Hello: Matt & Marie

How are you all by now? I am geting along fine. They have taken the wires off of my teeth now. But cant get my mouth open very far yet. Guess I have to have another operation I still have a piece of shrapnel in my left cheek. I think that is the reason I cant get my mouth open very far, and the left side of my face stays swelled up all the time. Well it sure is nice out here today. Otherwise it is raining most every day. We get to go to a show most every day. I got two letters from Verona yesterday and she said you was geting another furlough. Whish I was back where I could get one. Well have a good time while you can. Guess that is about all for now.

With love
Wilmer
